People exploring Tai Hang neighbourhood at Hong Kong Arts Development Council's Arts in the City: Revisit Tai Hang initiative

Easily one of our favourite neighbourhoods in Hong Kong, Tai Hang marches to its own charming rhythm where historical buildings and local cha chaan tengs sit alongside hipster cafes and indie boutiques. This autumn, the Hong Kong Arts Development Council is bringing back its Arts in the City initiative, offering locals and visitors a chance to explore this former Hakka village with renewed curiosity.

What is Arts in the City: Revisit Tai Hang?

Building on the inaugural art walk ‘small valley TAI HANG’ in 2023, the Arts in the City: Revisit Tai Hang project blends public art, heritage walks, and creative workshops to connect residents and visitors with the area’s Hakka village roots and mid-century architectural charm.

Arts in the City: Revisit Tai Hang Weaving the Future art installation by local artist Zoe Siu

What art installations can you see in Tai Hang?

Contemporary weaving takes the spotlight with local artist Zoe Siu’s brand-new installation, Weaving the Future. Continuing her creative exploration from the 2023 art walk, Siu reinterprets the traditional Hakka ‘fa dai’ blessing motif—specifically the olive-shaped ‘Lum Chai’ pattern—into striking, kite-like structures.

The delicate artworks are currently mounted across two local haunts, SonneCAD Coffee and Art Circle Atelier on Sun Chun Street. They offer a gentle visual nod to the area’s agricultural past, bridging historic Hakka folklore with contemporary streetscapes.

Arts in the City: Revisit Tai Hang creative workshops

What creative workshops are taking place?

Hands-on craft workshops run across four consecutive weekends in October at Art Circle Atelier, with ticketed sessions priced at HK$180 per person:

  • Tai Hang Flavours Handmade Incense Workshop: Mixed media artist Max Cheng guides participants through blending natural incense using recycled cha chaan teng milk tea leaves and specialty coffee grounds
  • Tai Hang Mythical Creature Paper Mache Workshop: Sculpture collective Hira Hira hosts two-hour sessions crafting paper-mache guardian beasts inspired by local folklore, including the Sulphur Night Fire Dragon and Golden Smiley Tiger.
  • Miniature Tai Hang Fire Dragon Crafting Workshop: Designer Felix Yiu teaches traditional wire-frame dragon construction scaled down into mini table pieces.
