Lee Tung Avenue in Wan Chai has officially kicked off its Mid-Autumn celebrations with Moon Fest Lumiere, filling the 200-metre pedestrian walkway with over 800 traditional red and palace lanterns from now until October 19, alongside seasonal workshops and cultural performances.
Traditional craftsmanship takes over
What makes the lantern display at Lee Tung Avenue worth a visit this year? The 2026 outdoor installation merges centuries-old paper-cutting traditions with modern light design across a shimmering sea of red, orange, pink, and purple lanterns.
For the first time, the canopy features custom palace lanterns depicting timeless Mid-Autumn folklore. As you stroll down the pedestrian street, look up to spot delicate paper-cut silhouettes illustrating stories like Hou Yi shooting down the suns, Chang’e ascending to the moon, the Jade Rabbit, and Wu Gang. Interspersed among the mythical scenes are warm depictions of modern family reunions, lantern-making, and sharing mooncakes. The lights switch on daily from 5pm to 11pm, extending to midnight on the night of the festival.
Catch the LED Fire Dragon Fiesta in action
The signature LED Fire Dragon Fiesta returns on September 25, 8.30pm at the Central Piazza.
Ditching traditional smoke and burning incense for high-tech LED illumination, the 18-metre LED fire dragon will weave its way down to the Queen’s Road East and Johnston Road entrances before circling back. The 45-minute spectacle honours Hong Kong’s intangible cultural heritage with a modern twist, complete with live performances by an LED lion and a energetic drum troupe.
Festive pop-ups, workshops, and musical performances
Visitors can also take part in additional activities like hands-on craft sessions, seasonal markets, live music, and heritage food pop-ups throughout September.
- Hang Heung pop-up store: Century-old bakery Hang Heung has set up shop at the Central Piazza until September 25. Photo spots include a giant Golden Mooncake Moon-gazing Seat and a Future Postbox where you can mail postcard greetings. Don’t miss their new Heart-Shaped Wife Mooncake (a collaboration with Julian Cheung).
- Mini palace lantern workshop: On September 19 and 20 (3pm–6pm), shoppers spending HK$300 or more via electronic payment can redeem a Mini Palace Lantern DIY Kit to assemble on site.
- WeekCommune market: Browse handmade mini lanterns, pet-friendly mooncakes, and festive accessories on September 12–13 and September 19–20.
- Mid-Autumn concert: Head over on September 26 between 2pm and 6pm for live vocal and instrumental sets from local music groups including FAME Singing Academy and YouthSing.
