Hong Kong Design Centre has unveiled two community-focused exhibitions at the DX design hub in Sham Shui Po, offering visitors a fresh perspective on local heritage, cat culture, and everyday objects. Running as part of the wider ‘Great Design Lives Here’ campaign, ‘Meow-cation — With Cats, We Connect’ and ‘Browse and Found in Sham Shui Po’ merge traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, giving the neighbourhood’s rich history a well-deserved moment in the spotlight.
Community bonds through craft and cats
‘Meow-cation — With Cats, We Connect’ explores the relationship between residents, local feline companions, and neighbourhood craft through an installation in The Square at DX design hub.
Co-curated alongside Edmund Kan of Art Dreamers, the showcase pays homage to the district’s storied textile manufacturing history. The centerpiece—a colossal patched cat installation—was constructed using local fabrics, buttons, and zippers sourced directly from Sham Shui Po’s market traders. More than 130 local students, fashion designers, and textile merchants collaborated to stitch the massive structure together piece by piece.
Beyond the feline mega-structure, visitors will find overhead ceiling projections displaying adoption-seeking rescue cats in partnership with House of Joy and Mercy. An interactive photo station allows guests to take a personality test to uncover their personal ‘cat persona’ illustrated by a local artist, complete with downloadable digital wallpapers. Hands-on textile workshops and public talks round out the project.
Rediscovering local culture through old objects
‘Browse and Found in Sham Shui Po’ uses digital archiving to showcase over 200 discarded and overlooked everyday items collected throughout the surrounding neighbourhood.
Curated by Ng Tsz Kwan of yucolab, the project sent 100 students into the alleys and markets of Sham Shui Po to observe, gather, and document items that reflect the district’s distinct street wisdom. The team captured second-hand goods, repurposed tools, and modified household wares using 3D scanning technology, preserving the ephemeral history of the area before it disappears.
The exhibition is located in The Box on the first floor of the facility. Together with five additional displays currently running at DX design hub, the overall initiative offers a broad look into community design, industrial heritage, and modern creative practice.
